Immediately After Surgery

Your surgery is complete, and the next thing you’ll notice is your nose is bandaged. Dr. William Portuese or Dr. Joseph Shvidler will apply a protective splint over your nose during the first phase of healing. At this point, you’ll likely still be groggy from anesthesia, which is entirely normal.

You’ll then be moved to a recovery room, where our skilled nursing team will monitor you for any complications. Once you are stable and Dr. Portuese or Dr. Shvidler signs off on your recovery, you’ll be discharged to go home.

Important: For safety reasons, you will need someone to drive you home as anesthesia can impair your ability to operate a vehicle. Even if you feel fine, we’ll require a companion for your release.

How Will I Feel the First Night After Surgery?

The first night is usually the most challenging part of recovery. You’ll likely be exhausted and may experience some pain and discomfort. The best thing you can do is rest and allow your body to heal. Did you know deep sleep aids your recovery? The better your sleep, the faster your body heals.

Here are some tips for a restful night:

  • Take pain medication as prescribed to manage discomfort and help you sleep.
  • Use extra pillows to prop yourself up, which can help reduce swelling.
  • Apply a cold compress to the nose area for 20 minutes at a time to minimize swelling.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and alleviate congestion.

The best rest is in a quiet, dark room, so set up a calming recovery space before your surgery. If you’re having trouble sleeping, feel free to ask Dr. Portuese or Dr. Shvidler’s team for additional sleep tips.

The First Few Days After Surgery

In the first few days post-surgery, you’ll likely feel fatigued and will need to rest as much as possible. Avoid strenuous activity and be cautious about anything bumping your nose—this includes children and pets!

You’ll have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Portuese or Dr. Shvidler shortly after surgery. During this visit, they will evaluate your healing, remove your dressings and any packing, and ensure you’re on track with your recovery.

You may experience:

  • Nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through your nose
  • Swelling of the face
  • Sore throat
  • Ear pain or pressure
  • Headaches
  • Numbness in your cheeks or upper lip

These symptoms are common and typically resolve on their own within a few days to a week. Dr. Portuese or Dr. Shvidler will provide helpful tips to manage these side effects.

What to Expect When Your Splint Comes Off

When your splint comes off, your nose will look different—but keep in mind, it’s still in the healing process. The swelling and bruising you experience during this time are temporary, and the final shape will not be visible until the swelling subsides. Be patient, as the full results will unfold gradually.

Important: Avoid blowing your nose for at least two weeks, as this can cause further swelling. If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open to avoid pressure on your nose.

A Week or Two After Surgery

By this time, most of the side effects like swelling and bruising should be significantly reduced. You should start feeling better and able to breathe through your nose more comfortably, although congestion may linger for a while. You can resume most low-impact activities within a week.

At your follow-up appointment, Dr. Portuese or Dr. Shvidler will assess your recovery and give you the green light to resume normal activities. However, avoid vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for at least three weeks after surgery.

Any numbness in your upper lip or cheeks should gradually resolve over the next few weeks or months.

Emotional Recovery

Rhinoplasty recovery isn’t just physical—it can also be emotional. It’s normal to feel down or anxious about your appearance, especially during the early days of healing. The bruising and swelling can make it hard to see the final result right away, which can be discouraging.

Remember why you chose rhinoplasty: to feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin. It’s important to be patient and trust the healing process. If you’re struggling emotionally, it may help to talk with a therapist to help manage your feelings. Your decision to enhance your appearance is something to be proud of.

Final Results

Once you’ve fully healed, your nose will look the way you’ve always imagined it. The refined shape will look natural, and most people won’t even realize you had surgery. Rhinoplasty is designed to create a seamless, balanced appearance, making your new nose look like it always belonged to you.
